Based on the plastic deformation of materials, the clinching technique is impressively innovative.

This process involves the interaction between a punch and a die, creating the desired shape without the need for additional material. Accurate punches, with applied force to the preconceived area, allow the punch to penetrate the metal sheets easily, creating a button point at the junction and forming a shape that would depend on toolkit geometry.

Types of Joints:

The deformation of metal sheets that are pressed in between the punch and the die is forced to extend laterally till they create a button-like shape. This area/point - trapezoidal/round type is decided by a trapezoidal punch and die/ or a round one.

Round points provide uniform strain in all directions.

The trapezoidal joint, on the other hand, allows for easy joining and can be applied to more than two layers.

Opposed to usual welding methods, Clinching joins various metals without any additional use of multiple elements like fill or weld materials, pegs, screws, rivets, nuts, and bolts.
